In 1999, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, department of heritage
(DAPA), the International Union of Architects
(UIA) and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (UMR-CNRS 694 MAP
), signed an agreement to develop a web index of architectural realisations around the world that marked 20th century architectural history.
To expand and enrich the site, the original partners signed a new cooperation agreement in June 2008, to include DoCoMoMo International
(the International committee for the Documentation and Conservation of buildings, sites and neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement) along with the original signatories. The site’s steering committee reviewed its presentation and functionalities at this time, and asked the designers (UMR-CNRS 694 MAP) to elaborate a new version.
The modernised website was unveiled at the International Union of Architects’ 23rd world congress in Turin, in June 2008, and presented at the 10th DoCoMoMo International conference in Rotterdam in September 2008. The site received wide praise on both occasions.
This project will continue to promote 20th century architectural heritage through the ongoing development of the database: adding new functionalities such as the automatic creation of educational documents, the ability to download digital reproductions, and new ways to diffuse news and information.
